Isolation

Right now everything we have left is hope. Never before in our generation, four letters have meant more for us. Never before such a small word has been petrol for our daily lives. We have been raised in a way that has made us thought about ourselves as an indestructible, untouchable individual being and so suddenly, we have been hit by reality; we have been deprived of our social life, favorite places and, most importantly, contact with people we love and care about.

As a society, we used to look towards the left when we were struck from the right and vice versa. Nevertheless, in the time place we are living, we simply can't ignore the events any longer but face them and, instead of reacting with morality, humanity and common sense, we are behaving quite the opposite: we have bought and piled up all the essential goods the whole of our community needs and therefore, depriving our neighbors of their right to doing so; we have ignored and avoided all the recommendations and governmental advice; we have disrespected and put in danger the lives of our loved ones and the rest of the citizens and, thereby, proving and demonstrating one more time we are the worst living kind.

During the last past days, I kept wondering how can we be so inconsiderate, selfish, greedy (not just for food but money), incompetent, immoral..., and I just could carry on. I was, and still am, astonished by the way we are reacting and then, among that rage, incomprehension and lack of certainty, I got a clarification: We are SCARED. And yes, I am aware of the fact we all have come to the same conclusion but I am going to break it down.

We are scared because we may lose everything we have been building, we have been pushed from our comfort and safe zone, we have been put away from the rest of the world, we are being bombarded by the social media with all kinds of information, we have been played because of our fear and desperation and, above all, because of the only thing we have right now: HOPE. Furthermore, we have been forced to deal with our own demons, those ones we all have put in an inner compartment very deep within us. Those ones we have so desperately tried to hide from the others and are about to show up with no hesitation or whatsoever. There is nothing scarier like our own ourselves.

Regarding this, I think it is the time to sit down with ourselves and have the conversations we have been avoiding, make peace with ourselves and come to agreements and make commitments. We have the chance of getting rid of all the negative aspects that are stopping us to do better, to be better.  We are being allowed to consolidate our personal relationships, to share time with our loved ones, to do all those things we have on our goal list. We have the chance to change and learn so, why can we not just take it?

I know we are social animals and that physical contact is a primordial need for our specie but, to offer our best, we have to make ourselves sure that we are our best version as well and, for better or worse, this is the time and, probably, the last opportunity we will have in  a while if we truly want to make a real change.
